Aspartame is a low-calorie artificial sweetener used in various food and drink products. It is about 200 times sweeter than sugar but contains very few calories. It’s made from two amino acids: aspartic acid and phenylalanine. It’s generally considered safe for consumption but should be avoided by people with phenylketonuria (PKU).
