L-lactic acid is the naturally occurring form of lactic acid and is a byproduct of anaerobic metabolism in muscles and other tissues. It is a carboxylic acid commonly used in food preservation, as a flavor enhancer, and in the production of biodegradable plastics. In cosmetics and skincare, it serves as an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) for exfoliation.
